BOAT ENGINE REPOWER

March 8, 2016

This winter, a NorthCoast 24 was repowered at HYS. Two 220 hp Chrysler gas engines were replaced with a pair of Yanmar 4BY engines rated at 180 hp each. The reduction in horsepower may marginally reduce the vessel’s top speed, but will greatly increase its out of pocket performance due to greater low end torque. This is a particular problem associated with these NorthCoast 24s. We hope to also have improved performance and trim with the inclusion of new trim planes, which should promote a more level running attitude.

Repower Benefits

The old gasers were having increasing reliability issues with age and parts were becoming harder to source. The new engines will run quieter with significantly improved fuel economy and expanded range with the same fuel capacity. The project also provided the opportunity to update gagues to a new digital format that will integrate with other electronics and controls, which will make the boat easier to handle. The new engines fit into the existing footprint with very little modification to the bed logs and were were able to keep the existing shaft sizing and propellers. As part of the repower, the engine boxes were reconfigured from the original factory set-up to make the engines more accessible and easier to service and maintain.

Repowering a boat is one cost-efficient alternative to purchasing a new boat or continuing expensive maintenance on an old engine, and doing so will increase the boat’s value. It can also provide more power, better fuel efficiency, increased performance, and improved driving pleasure, maneuverability, comfort, safety, and reliability. The knowledgeable HYS team can help you determine if a repower is your best option. For more information, contact us: 207-633-2970 or info@hodgdonyachtservices.com.
